Wooder Manor is family run and has just entered its third generation of the Bell Family where we offer the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life. Nestled within a picturesque valley in the environmentally sensitive area of Dartmoor National Park, we can offer the perfect base from which to explore and discover the wild beauty and majesty of this spectacular landscape.
Surrounded by unspoilt patchworks of fields, hedgerows, stonewalls, woodland, and granite tors, the neighbouring farmland is at an organic higher level. We are a level 1/2 mile walk from the picturesque village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor where the world famous Widecombe Fair dating back to 1850, still takes place every year. Local amenities in the village include a local post office, gift shops, children's outside play area, riding stables and a National Trust Information Centre. A choice of cafes and traditional inns which source and provide fine local produce ensure an authentic taste of Devon.
Wooder Manor is an ideal central location for touring Devon and exploring Dartmoor. Walkers are spoilt for choice with walks to suit everyone starting from the doorstep, and it is just a leisurely stroll to a hike on the moors. There are fantastic opportunities for horse riding, cycling, canoeing, fishing, golf, rock climbing painting and bird watching, or just simply relax and take in the breath taking views from one of our cosy cottages.
Dartmoor is rich in prehistoric remains with the medieval settlements at Hound Tor and Grimspound being very good examples and at Haytor the granite tramway is still clearly visible. Guests also enjoy the folklore and mythical legends for which Dartmoor is renowned: Jay's grave, Hairy Hands, Wistmans Wood, and it was the setting and inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous book, the Hound of the Baskervilles.
Local attractions include Woodlands Leisure Park, Pennywell Farm, Go Ape Treetop Adventure, Haldon Forest Activity Park, Splashdown Water Park, Paignton Zoo, Haytor, Bone Hill, Castle Drogo, Buckfast Abbey, Lydford Gorge, Saltram House, Becky Falls, Dart Valley Railway. For those who would also like to visit the coast, there are miles of sandy beaches to choose from within 30 minutes drive.
Wooder Manor provides five unique holiday homes named after the overlooking granite tors. The cottages and converted coach house sleeping 2/4 and 4/6 are clean and well equipped all with central heating. Two properties are on the ground floor and Lower Hameldown has a wheel-in shower.
